If the thoughts and feelings that had just run through the small body of the girl sitting alone in the dark could run through those radio waves that connected their two small cellular devices and then on through the body of the boy driving down a highway all alone in the dark, like her voice was, I think that that lone girl and that lone boy would have been inseparable, interlocked forever. As it was, all he heard was her voice, only effected with awe and excitement and envy, none of her previous feelings.
"Yes, well, I'm not sure you would have had much fun. My grandfather is really crazy. He is really rich, cause he owns a liqueur company in Denmark and Germany, but he just lives in his cottage out in the mountains, chops his own wood and raises his own sheep. It was really cold. But anyway, that sounds like a deal." He smiled at the tail lights the silver Mazda in front of him. "Okay, the story. Well, this grandfather and grandmother were or is my father's parents. They moved here during World War II, then when my dad was about my age, they wanted to move back home. Dad wanted to stay, because he'd met my mom my then and they wanted to marry. So my grandfather and grandmother went back to Denmark without him, and have since. Dad went to visit them every once in a great while, when I was younger. With Mom, and stuff. But we haven't gone for a long time. Not since Mom died. So your turn."
He never had told her his mother was dead, had he? He'd just never mentioned her at all, never said anything to her that would even hint to a missing parent, that giant gaping hole. Sometimes he felt like people could see that hole in his chest, when he walked around, or when the wind blew and his shirt stuck to his chest, surely they could see that hole. But they never seemed to. He supposed that it took one to see one. Either way, he was anxious to stay off of that topic.
